Just Good Chocolate’s Commitment to Excellence
Just Good Chocolate is one of those companies you just love to collaborate with. Nichole and Drew don’t just have a passion for great cacao related goodies, the have a passion for the planet and the people that are inhabitants our wonderful earth. Nestled up in northern Michigan’s Lake Leelanau they are striving to be fully powered by wind and solar while also only using premium organic and fair trade ingredients. It’s such a relief to work with individuals that share a passion for food and genuinely care about the sustainable supply chain behind it all.
Here’s Nichole with an in depth look behind the scenes of Just Good Chocolate.
Tell us a little about yourself and the company you own/run:
Just Good Chocolate was born from a passion for social justice, environmental sustainability and of course – chocolate. Our guiding principles are in our name:
Just: adjective 1) guided by truth, reason, justice, and fairness 2) done or made according to principle 3) equitable; proper
Good: adjective 1) kind, beneficent, or friendly 2) honorable or worthy 3) healthy; beneficial
We believe that doing business and doing good don’t have to be two separate things, and that we can make the world a better place through chocolate. We think organic farmers are the true rock stars in this world and should be treated as such. We hope that as we grow we can create long-standing and mutually-beneficial relationships with cocoa farmers around the world and help them to create better lives for themselves, their families, and communities.
What is your location and when did you start/how long has the company been in business:
We have a small production kitchen in Leland (way up in the Michigan’s pinky finger aka Leelanau County). We started in 2011 in a small shared kitchen space in Traverse City and in 2013 moved into our own space closer to home and right down the road from where are kids go to school. With five amazing kids, it has been a dream come true to be close to them and have a business that allows us to put our family first.
What makes your products special/unique:
We have ridiculously high standards when it comes to ingredients, so not only are all of our ingredients certified organic and fairly traded, but they are of the finest quality. We then work to create recipes that let these premium ingredients shine.
What’s the favorite part about your job:
Knowing that what we do matters. Supporting fair trade farming communities as well as our local community through our work is incredibly satisfying. And smelling like chocolate every day when you leave work is pretty cool, too.
Where can we buy more of your products:
You can find a list (that is not always up to date, but we try) of stores carrying our products at http://justgoodchocolate.
You can also buy our products online at justgoodchocolate.com
And if you have a local store you would like to carry our products, please let us know!
Whats the best way to enjoy/eat/prepare/utilize your product:
Our Nibblers are a wonderful snack on their own, just tip the bag and pour directly into your mouth But if you want to get creative, we love to put them into a hot bowl of oatmeal or some vanilla yogurt.
The Mug O’ Love is meant to be stirred into hot milk – whatever your favorite milk may be. Don’t be afraid to try it in almond or coconut milk. Or stirred into your morning joe. We also drink it cold in the Summer and make fudge pops out of it.
