“I’m Having an Affair…. With a Box of Truffles”

Let’s start off by saying that I’m always skeptical of truffles, I’ve tasted many a messy glob masquerading as a hand made truffle before.   Let it be know, Pete’s Chocolate Co. has the truffle game on lock down – ladies and gentleman this is how you make truffles.  I ate the whole box of 5 the first time I tried them…. in 2 minutes!!  I had to try all the unique flavors and each was seemingly better than the last.  If you don’t love these nuggets then you must not have a mouth, or at least taste-buds.  Well before I go through withdrawals from using my hands to type instead of placing more of these truffles on my palate I’ll let Pete take over and explain the secrets behind his delicacies.

Tell us a little about yourself and the company you own/run

Pete’s Chocolate Co. is an independent small-batch chocolatier based in the City of Detroit. We make hand-rolled truffles with Belgian chocolate, locally sourced hormone-free dairy, and an array of fruits, nuts, spices and other tasty all-natural things. Hand-rolled truffles are unique because of their soft, creamy texture and especially rich flavor. We also make hot chocolate mix, and sometimes we make other chocolaty things.

Pete’s Chocolate Co. was started in 2009 by Pete Steffy, who learned the ways of chocolate from a chocolatier named Iván Arce while living in the small city of San Cristóbal de las Casas in the southern highlands of Mexico, the original home of chocolate as we know it. He brought what he learned back to Detroit, where he has worked on developing recipes for a variety of both classic and unique flavors. He has continued his studies in chocolate by working with other chocolatiers, doing lots of experimenting, and eating copious amounts of chocolate from across the Americas and Europe.

Pete’s Chocolate Co. is proud to be a part of the incredible community of small food entrepreneurs in the Detroit area, and is a member of FoodLab Detroit.

What is your location and when did you start/how long has the company been in business

Pete’s Chocolate Co. doesn’t have our own retail location, but we are based in the City of Detroit and you can get our products at a handful of stores and cafes around town.

I started making truffles in 2009 after learning about the process from a chocolatier whom I met while living in Mexico. At first it was just a hobby; but as I honed my skills, developed a collection of recipes that I was really excited about and got a lot of positive feedback from the people around me, I decided to go into business. It’s been a great past few years and we’ve been growing steadily, fueled mostly by word of mouth and the amazing customers who keep coming back for more.

What makes your products special/unique

We make fresh hand-rolled truffles, which are unique because of their especially soft, delicate texture and very rich flavor. We use only the highest quality ingredients, and since we make the truffles by hand in small batches, each and every truffle has been given individual attention to make it the best-quality product possible.

What’s the favorite part about your job

I love that I have been able to turn something that I would do for fun into a business. I’m extremely grateful that I am able to spend my time doing something that I enjoy, making a product that I am excited about and proud of, bringing joy to others, and participating in the wonderful and ever-growing economy of small businesses in Detroit.

Right now our distribution is pretty limited, but we are ever expanding. Our products are currently available at Fourteen East Cafe in Midtown Detroit, 8 Degrees Plato Beer Co. in Ferndale, Germack Cafe in Eastern Market, Cafe 1923 in Hamtramck, and online through Door to Door Organics. We also occasionally sell at Eastern Market, Rust Belt Market, and at other events and popup markets around town. What’s the best way to enjoy/eat/prepare/utilize your product

Our truffles are very rich, and I encourage you to eat them slowly and savor them. Take a small bite and allow the chocolate to melt and coat your mouth, helping bring out all of the intricacies of the flavors. Chocolate pairs very well with lots of other flavors, so try the truffles side-by-side with a cup of coffee, a glass of your favorite red wine, or fresh fruit.

The truffles should be stored in a cool, dry place prior to being eaten and should always be eaten at room temperature for the best flavor and texture
