Backwoods Mustard Company, out of Davison, MI, is quickly becoming our go-to addition to the burgers and roasts we have been making at Mitten Crate HQ during the “Polar Vortex”. Huge on flavor but mild on the traits the throw mustard overboard, heat, vinegar, or sweetness, Backwoods is an awesome company that produces one of the highest quality condiments you can keep in your fridge that is sure to please even the most persnickety persons you know .

Tell us a little about yourself and the company you own/run
Our company is called Backwoods Mustard Company and is owned by myself, Brian Ernst, and my business partner David Saterstad. Our product and our company is really a culmination of tradition and love for the outdoors. The recipe for the “Sweet Jalapeno” mustard was perfected by my mother over 20 years ago and has its roots in the backwoods of Northern Michigan (hence our name) at our family deer camp. Tradition holds significance at our camp so I didn’t dare arrive without any mustard. The demand would soon spillover to various other events from camping weekends to backyard barbecues. I had to make a decision to either stop making mustard in my kitchen, or turn it into a business. Here we are.
What is your location and when did you start/how long has the company been in business
We are located in Davison, MI. Although our Sweet Jalapeno mustard has been around for over 20 years, we just launched our business in May of 2013.
What makes your products special/unique
The most unique thing about our mustard is the taste. Ironically, people that don’t like jalapenos don’t eat hot foods, and hate mustard still tend to really like our product. It’s a bit of a rule breaker.
What’s the favorite part about your job
The best part about our job is that it’s not a job at all. We are doing what we love to do! We get to meet and do business with great people that are as proud and excited to buy Made in Michigan products as we are to sell and make them. There is a real tangible feeling of pride and energy in Michigan right now with Michigan-made products and we’re just thankful we are part of the movement.

Our mustard is now carried in over 100 stores in Michigan, Ohio, and Oklahoma. Here in Michigan you can find it on the “Made in Michigan” end caps at 37 Kroger stores in Metro Detroit, Flint, Ann Arbor, Port Huron and Frankenmuth. You can also find it at Westborn Markets, Hillers, Holiday Market, Nino Salvaggio’s, Vince & Joe’s, and at Great Harvest Bread Company in Lake Orion and Grand Blanc.

Whats the best way to enjoy/eat/prepare/utilize your product
That’s a very good question with a very long answer. Really depends on what you like to eat. Some common uses would include: pretzel/chip dip, marinade, BBQ sauce, sandwich spread, potato salad, brats and burgers.
